Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of silica sand mixed with waterglass binder on blow-hole defects in the metal casting process at PT. Kartika Alas Utama. The methods used include visual testing, chemical composition analysis, and shrinkage calculation. The results indicate that using a mixture of silica sand and waterglass, with proper moisture control and mold ventilation, significantly reduces blow-hole defects. The chemical composition of the cast metal showed dominance of Fe (98.17%), C (0.41%), and Si (0.61%), which influence the mechanical properties of the metal. An average shrinkage rate of 1.74% reflects good dimensional stability of the cast products. The study concludes that optimizing parameters such as waterglass concentration, ventilation control, and sand moisture can improve casting quality and minimize blow-hole defects.
