Abstract

Jerry cans are a type of plastic product that is molded by a blow molding machine. Extrusion blow molding is a method of molding hollow workpieces that does not use a core, the process of blowing air into the material at a certain speed and pressure towards the mold.  Extrusion blow molding technology is carried out with the aim of producing products with the best quality characteristics such as good shape and appearance, mechanical and physical properties, dimensional stability but often results in many product defects. This research aims to identify several product defects that occur during the production process of 5 liter jerry cans made from High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) and analyze the causes of these defects. The classification of product defects is divided into two categories based on the manufacturing stage, namely defects in the parison and defects in the product. At the parison defect stage, folding neck, blow outs, and parison lengths inconsistencies were found. At the defect stage in the product, the types of defects found were poor handle trimming, poor bottom trimming, poor trimming, die lines, flashing, foreign matter in the melt – black specks, foreign matter in the melt – hole, sticking and webbing. The results of identifying product defects can be used as a reference for improving production process performance.
